How a Surf Magazine Turned into One of Running’s Most Creative Brands

The Concept

In 2023, the project began as a collection of photographs and stories documenting friends surfing in Santa Cruz - a creative outlet that gradually evolved from expression into connection.

Coming from a background in track and field at UC San Diego, where I studied computer science, music, and visual arts, I started to see clear parallels between sport, art, and storytelling. My years working in commercial photography and film taught me a great deal, but I was craving a deeper sense of creative freedom.

That pursuit led me towards a slower, more intentional approach to product development. It took three years to create something I fully believed in, built with trusted factories and materials I genuinely loved. I’m driven by emotion; when something feels right, both the product and the people around it begin to align.

POV

What makes Currently unique is the people who support it, and the freedom and creativity they bring to it.

There is a distinct quality to everything we do that comes directly from that energy. It feels raw, emotional, human, and spontaneous.

That also creates room for vulnerability and closeness, which is what makes the brand feel alive. At its core, my role is to tell the story of these people with all the material, skill, and care I can bring to it.

The Future

The brand is rooted in radical connection and active participation in the sport of running. Showing up in ways that feel meaningful, creative, and engaging will always be the priority. Just as importantly, it is about making the best-feeling clothes possible to run in.

Now that the product is in a really strong place, I see 2026 as an opportunity to go deeper into the storytelling power of the brand. For me, that side has taken a back seat while I focused on developing the product, imagery, and photography.

I’m really looking forward to building a team next year and seeing what we can create together.
